Ade Vol.1
Size: 8” x 11.5”
Pages: 160
Published: 2008
Price: $60
Binding: Softcover
This book is awesome. It is called Ade vol. 1 and is a collection of tattoo sketch and design work by Ade, who works at Nine, in Brighton UK. Ade has a signature style - he pulls from the classic ukiyo-e artists, particularly Hokusai, and is similarly influenced by contemporary Japanese tebori master Horiyoshi III. This book includes some fantastic illustrations. Beautiful renditions of koi, Japanese demons, oni, dragons, snakes, lotus, chrysanthemums, tigers, hannya, fox, namakubi (severed heads) skulls, cherry blossoms, Buddist gods, kingyo (Japanese goldfish) and other classic Japanese imagery. The first 2/3 of the book are monochrome sketches, and the last 1/3 is watercolor paintings and full color examples of his tattoo work featuring designs included in the book. It is softcover, 8" x 11.5" and 160 pages with nice, big illustrations on one side. All in all a great, no nonsense reference book.

This is a collection of illustrations, sketches and photos from Japanese tattoo master, Horimasa. A tebori artist by trade (the traditional Japanese method of tattooing by hand) Horimasa breathes new life into fundamental Japanese tattoo motifs in this compilation. That he's studied the masters of traditional ukiyo-e (woodblock prints) is evident in his work and his approach to traditional Japanese iconography is bold and confident. His lines are incredibly clean and color use is brilliant. This book includes a wide variety of Japanese traditional tattoo imagery. It features a variety of samurai, Gods and Goddesses, oni, goblins, tigers, Hannya, dragons, geisha, koi, foo dogs, animals and insects....it has a little bit of everything. It includes full color, full pages illustrations, complete single line drawings, preliminary sketches and sketches devoted to particularly tricky details, like hands, feet, eyes and claws. It also includes a 50 full page, full color photo section of Horimasa's tattoo work, shot by world renowned photographer Geoff Johnson. This book is nice a big, printed on thick, high quality paper and comes in a cardboard slipcase for protection. Gomineko’s newest publication Japanese Ghost Stories is the end result of a year long art project.
It includes illustrations based on four different Japanese ghost stories, submitted by 62 unique international artists, including Jack “Horimouja” Mosher, Horimasa, Ade, Cody Meyer, Tim Kern, Horizaru, Horigyn, Hougen and more. The project was created to explore how Westerners approach old Japanese myths and legends, most of which are quite culturally diverse and unique. The artists were asked to adhere to certain elements of the story but ultimately were given creative license. The artwork submitted for the project was incredibly varied in terms of style and approach, making this a compelling collection of illustrations and an interesting look into how the western mind, as well as that of present day Japan, approach these antiquated tales.

A testament to hard livin and fast women, this book embodies a rebellious spirit so tangible....it leaps from the page to punch you in the face. Meyer's illustrations are a whirlwind of tattoo imagery, inamorata, 90's icons, personal battles won and lost, hope, desire, grief and unabashed loyalty...crafted with a discerning eye and the patience of a saint. Meyer may still be getting his sea legs in this industry, but impounded within the covers of this book is a powerful roar of protest and a raised fist.
