This book is AWESOME!! It is a great new collection of dragon imagery perfect for tattoo design. It includes tons of full page full color imagery as well as instructional pages which focus on tricky areas - 12 pages of heads and pages devoted to noses, horns, ears, eyes, claws, tails - this is the most comprehensive book on drawing Japanese dragons one I've seen yet. The book is softcover, appx. 8.5" x 11.5" and 166 pages. Text in Japanese. A must have for tattoo artists interested in traditional Japanese imagery, and Japanesque art collectors.
This book is called Doubutzu Shokubutsu Sai Kai (loosely translated this means - animal and plant colorful pictures) and it is the best Jakuchu survey book for the buck. It includes most of his bird/flower and animal studies - nice big prints of his roosters!
Jakuchu was born in Kyoto, Japan in 1715. He is a solitary figure in the history of Japanese painting, way ahead of his time his style decorative, elaborate and daring. He remained unknown until well after his death, when he was rediscovered in the late 19th century.
Jakuchu's animals are a personal favorite....his phoenix and roosters in particular. This book includes images of ducks, his roosters, the phoenix, peacock, butterfly, cranes, many great fish, octopus (my favorite), toad, dragonflies, crickets and other insects, stingray, shells and assorted small birds...also includes a variety of trees, plants, leaves and flowers. His choice of color and attention to detail are both unique yet quintessentially Japanese. He brings subtle earth tones to life with brilliant red accents - a sun or rooster crown. His underwater scenes are equally stunning, darker yet with vivid details. This book includes full page, full color reproductions of his birds and animals, as well as separate full pages devoted to close ups of particular points of interest - a rooster head or a particularly vivid fish. Brilliant resource book and a must have for any tattoo art book collection.
This book is a collection of monochrone and tri-colored woodblock prints marketed for use on the outermost kimono...therefore the most detailed. It features over 120 pages of woodblock prints of predominately different birds, plants and pattern work; plus a section in the back of single line designs...again more animals and georgeous flowers. Contains images of cranes, hawks, swallows, roosters, lots of assorted plants and trees, waves, dragon, a foo dog, cat, rabbit, boats, butterflies, armor, turtles, eel, bats, cherry blossoms and more. A great book for woodblock print collectors/artists, and those interested in traditional Japanese design and patterning - this book has large inspiring images for those in need of ideas...great for tattooing.
This is a great book on drawing/painting Japanese Tigers. It is one of the most comprehensive ones I've seen yet - incredibly thorough. It includes a section on faces, legs/paws, body positions, ears, mouths, tails and stripes. The illustrations range from basic outline to full color completed piece. It details both the Japanese style, slouchy, hunched sad eyed tigers on ukiyo-e and the more ferocious, powerful creatures that are seen in Western and Chinese Art. It is predominately illustrations - all text is in Japanese. A must have for tattoo artists interested in traditional Japanese imagery.
This is an amazing collection of Dragon Imagery by Seiryu Kitabatake that came out December 2005.....(I believe it is a reprint of a collection from 1997 that was put out by a publishing company that was bought out) anywhoo it is one of the most amazing collections available in Japan. It includes 88 pages of predominantly monochrome, full page images. The very little text there is, is in Japanese but the book consists mainly of amazing Japanese dragons in a multitude of poses.
I am gonna come right out and say it....this is the best book on cocks I have ever seen!! It is amazing!! Beatifully bound and printed on high quality paper this book boasts 400 pages full of images of Japanese roosters - really, really incredible. Includes stunning photographs as well as images in art. The book includes few pages of text (in Japanese) the rests is full color images. This is a brilliant reference book for any artist interested in traditional and not so traditional Japanese renditions of these great birds. This book is out of print so snatch it up now.
I LOVE THIS BOOK. It is called KAIKI CHOJYU ZUKAN (strange bird/animal picture collection) and features 100 full color images, 1 per page, of mythological creatures including birds with dragon heads, tigers that are part goat, a beast with part snake - part human features, really creepy stuff. The last 50 pages are monochrome thumbnails of more creatures. The book is appx. 6"x8.5" and 155 pages reading right to left. Text is in Japanese. This book is a good one for anyone interested in antique Japanese imagery and anyone intersted in images to use as a springboard for original artwork and designs.
This is a great little reference book on Japanese cat imagery. Itincludes 126 pages (both full color and monochrome) of Japanese cat illustrations - both paintings and ukiyo-e. Cats are depicted in a wide range of styles...sweet, aloof and in some of the ukiyo-e, menacing - since there are Japanese Ghost stories involving cats. Includes some cool anthropomorphized cats donning kimono and dancing. Lots of food for thought in this little collection. Text is minimal and in Japanese. This is a great Japanese art and tattoo reference book - great to have around the shop.
This book is cool and a little different from most of the Japanese tigers books in that these tigers are fierce. They strike aggressive poses and are not reminiscent of the ukiyo-e pussycat tigers that the Japanese are infamous for. Lots of great full color and line drawing illustrations plus individual pages devotes to heads, noses, eyes, mouths and whiskers, teeth, tongues, ears, foreheads, stripes, paws and tails and rounded out with a step by step approach to crafting an amazing tiger. This one is one of my favorite tiger reference books and it it out of print, so snatch this one up.

Excellent resource book.
This is a great little Japanese book on Dragon and Phoenix designs. 140 pages of monochrome images, an average of 4 to a page, and 22 full color pages in the back all of Dragons and Phoenix. Very good for people looking for an original image, solid black line drawings perfect for tattoo work - easy to replicate or use as a base for your own original artwork. Great little reference book to have around the shop.
This is a great new collection of dragon imagery perfect for tattoo design. It includes both dragons by master artists like Hokusai as well as current artists who specialize in traditional Japanese imagery. There is a brilliant range of styles in the dragons - each artists brings something new to the book - allowing the reader a broad scope of possibilities. The book is cover to cover illustrations - not so much text in this one, although what is there is in Japanese. The images are, for the most part, ink on paper and therefore monochrome. I Love this book. It is one of a series put out by a publishing house in the Netherlands and the whole series is amazing...The book has introductions in English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, dutch, Japanese and Chinese....a little something for everyone! It includes a mac/win compatible CD-ROM of the images. Great for simple small tattoo pieces, frames and bands. This stuff will steer you as an artist and your clients as well down a new avenue of tattoo design.....these are classic pieces yet to be tapped and truly timeless. This book is a great springboard for tattoo ideas and will be a welcome addition to any individual or shop collection.
This is a great book on Syogaku Emoto's dragons, unique in that they are in color instead of the more prominent monochrome illustrations. Not so much a 'how to' book this one features more completed illustrations. Lots of full page, full color dragons in a variety of positions - there are some great red suns and flames. There is a section on the technical aspect of adding color at the end. All in all a great reference book to have around the shop.
This is an awesome collection of brilliant bird and flower imagery - pocket size and great for conventions. Chrysanthemums, sakura, peony, bamboo, cranes, mandarin, phoenix, peacocks, swallows and so so so much more. Do yourself a big favor.....
This is an AMAZING collection of artwork by Japanese master artist Katsushika Hokusai, one of my personal favorites. This is all 15 of the sketchbooks and Manga COMPLETE and bound in one encyclopedic volume! 932 pages of art - an invaluable reference book! This is all the animals, plants, men, women, gods, architecture, demons, objects - basically everything Hokusai saw in his life that he chronicled for future reference (little did he know how far into the future his material would be referenced!) These prints have been previously published individually both in paperback and hardback (the hardback volumes are now out of print), but this is the first time you can get them all in one go. This book is a monster! Text is in Japanese and book reads right to left, Japanese style.
This is a good little "how to" book for painting asian birds. It ahighlights peacocks, pheasants, cranes, egrets, eagles, owls mandrins and mallards. This is a great survey book on the works of master ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Hiroshige - a contemporary of Hokusai. Includes people, animals - great fish, koi, monkey, ducks, birds...a cool lobster - some of his geisha, plants, and some stunning landscapes. This is a great introduction to his work. He was inspired to become an Ukiyo-e artist by Hokusai's 36 veiws of Mt. Fuji (Hiroshige was a fireman by trade, like his father) and he made his mark in history with his own 56 Stations of the Tokaido - painting famous views along this long road that connects Edo (Tokyo) with Kyoto. Hiroshige is a personal favorite. I purchased a copy of the monkey when I first started collection Japanese art and it is amazing. Hiroshige uses bold blues to bring his pieces to life. His colors are striking and really draw the eye. His plants and animals are very detailed and quintessentially Japanese - making this a great reference book for artist interested in Japanese Imagery. Brilliant tattoo reference. Reads right to left, Japanese style and text is in Japanese.

This is an amazing book by the people that did the Kingyo and Niwatori books I ha ve in other auctions - if you are going to make one new acquisition this month, this should be it. It is called Mythical Beasts of Japan - From Evil Creatures to Sacred Beasts (sounds similar to the art shows I have been organizing this past year!) and it includes an impressive collection of ukiyo-e woodblock and screen paintings from traditional Japanese masters that feature a huge assortment of creatures. Moreover it has an index in the back that explains the significance and characterstics of eash one. All text, irtroduction as well, is in Japanese and English. Japanese Traditional Sumi-e Illustrations Size: 8.5” x 11” - Pages: 152 - Published: 2003 - Price: $48 - Binding: Softcover
This is a collection of Sumi-e Ink Paintings called HAKEN SUIBOKUGA (discovery ink drawing). The prints in this collection are monochrome - black or sepia tones. Some have faint color or color accents. Prints are very stunning, traditional Japanese scenes, many craggy mountains, plum blossoms and cranes, monkeys, dragons and tigers, gods and men, bamboo forests, carp and heron. Book is 152 pages and includes 135 pages of images, most full page or half page (they are nice and large). Book also includes a great pull out print of a man who holds an open bottle that has released a dragon. This is a great book. The sumi-e ink lines are great for creating base images for original artwork. This book would be great to have as an in-shop reference book, it would also make a welcome addition to a personal collection of Japanese art/print books.
This is a new publication on drawing dragons with a huge focus on step by step crafting. Attention is paid specifically to eyes, claws, scales, horns, snouts, whiskers - all the tricky parts that, when done well, make a dragon illustration stand out. If you are trying to fine tune your dragons this book is exactly what you are after!
This is a great little book. I have been waiting for a book to be published devoted to FOO DOGS or KOMAINU as the statues guarding the temples are called in Japanese. Not only have they finally done it, they translated the text so it is printed in both English and Japanese. The photos in the book are of statues, not illustrations. The book focuses on foo dogs guarding different temples and their history. It outlines the history and purpose of foo dogs in Asian culture and illustrates differences between the Edo lion and the Naniwa foo dog. Photos are dated so you can see the growth and development of these statues. All in all a very cool reference book.

The book includes few pages of text (in Japanese), the forward has been translated into English but the rest is full color full page illustrations. This is a brilliant compilation and would be a great addition to anyone collecting Japanese kimono art, or interested it traditional Japanese designs.
This is a really great little tattoo reference book and the first I have seen that focuses predominately on Kirin. The Japanese Kirin traces it‘s origins to Chinese mythology, but they‘ve diverged quite a bit in physical appearance and attributes. In Japan, Kirin are believed to be more powerful than dragons or phoenix, but much less aggressive. The Kirin is a benevolent creature, a protector, that, while incredibly powerful, will not harm another living creature unnecessarily. They do not hunt or eat meat and supposedly move without disrupting even the grass underfoot. They are said to appear only in lands ruled by a just and virtuous leader, therefore the appearance of a Kirin is a very good omen, particularly for the ruling family, as they are fierce adversaries of deceit and cruelty. Some legends portray Kirin as a sacred pet of the gods. Kirin are said to have the head of a dragon, the body of a deer, often covered with the scales of a fish or dragon, the legs of a horse and the tail of a bull. They usually have antlers or a single horn in the center of their foreheads. This book contains a variety of Kirin images in various angles and stature as well as some Dragons, Phoenix, Foo Dogs and Gembu. A must have! Stock on this book is limited, I only get them in occasionally so please understand if there is a delay on your order. If this book is out of stock I will refund your payment and let you know as soon as more come in. xx

This book is called Modern Design of Japan and features brilliant, traditional Japanese butterflies imagery. It is 88 pages total with 76 pages of full color images, 47 of which feature butterflies. The remaining pages feature abstract patterns, full color, like one might find on furoshike. The book is well bound and quite impressive. The butterflies alone brilliant enough for single image tattoo work, the patterns great for background construction. Original artwork with a very pronounced Japanese influence. Great book to have around the shop.

This is a great collection of Japanese cat imagery. I've seen many of these prints before in the out of print Orange Kuniyoshi Humorous Illustrations book but if you don't want to fork out $400 then I'd suggest you pick this one up instead! It has the monster cats (bakeneko) prints, illustrations of cats as pets and tons of pages devoted cats with human characteristics which I just love....cats in kimono performing daily tasks, dancing, debating, playing musical instruments etc...very cool. There is sure to be something that appeals to everyone in this book, making it a great one to have around the shop.
This book is amazing and I highly recommend it! It's a beautiful cloth bound collection of foo dog reference by Mummy Tattoo's Dong Dong. Predominately full page, full color illustrations, with a few sketches and close ups of eyes and claws. Dong Dong's sketches are full of movement and expression - they are powerful and translate beautifully into tattoos. This is the best foo dog reference I have seen on the market - do yourself a favor!
This really is the best little animal reference pocket book ever. Over 300 pages of animals, both sketches and full color renditions - and decent ones at that. Various poses, an amazing variety of species - including dinosaurs, and best of all it'll fit in your back pocket making it perfect to take to conventions. This book is a cool book of outlines of traditional Japanese animals originally intended to help calligraphy students. Sumi-e Guide Book - Sea Creatures, Plants and Insects.
This is a great book on how to create traditional Japanese stylized sea creatures. plants and insects. Predominately sea creatures it illustrates step by step painting techniques for lobster, fish, shellfish, and well as details crabs, vegetables, insects, butterflies, snails. Great book designed to assist artists with their own unique compositions.
This is an awesome new publication of dragon illustrations created specifically for tattoo artists. From single line to fully rendered with background imagery, this book is cover to cover inspiration. It's unique in that there is a section devoted to dragons w/ plants and flowers as well as in the fact that there was more than one artistic contributor....allowing for a variety of style and composition. Predominately full page monochrome images, with a small section of work in full color at the end. This is a great book for any serious tattooer.
This is a new rather hectic book of dragon illustrations....includes contributions from 10 different artists giving the collection a lot of diversity. All monochrome except the first 8 pages there is a lot of food for thought in this book. A page and a half of claws and a step by step face construction helps you through some of the trickier areas. All in all a good reference book.
Seiryu's dragons are remarkably feminine and delicate. The compositions are fluid and she makes great use of wind and flames. The first half of the book is sumi-e so monochrome illustrations, the latter half is gold on black etchings...predominately Buddhist imagery. I was really struck by how unique Seiryu's approach is to a very thoroughly explored motif! If you are in the market for something different, check this out.
While not as good as the out of print PIE Niwatori book I am selling, this book does a good job capturing the awesome Japanese, um, cock. Some great head shots, tail displays and feather close ups. All in all some great reference.
Well over 1500 photos of animals doing numerous activities = reference jackpot. Huge section on cats and assorted dogs - this was designed with the manga artist in mind, but includes a huge wild animal section in the back as well.
Great collection of small bird illustrations. Predominately monochrome sumi ink illustrations, the first half is essentially "how to" instructionals. This is not you average joe swallow imagery but if you get requests for song birds n cherry blossoms this book will definitely prove handy.
This is a cool little book on the bats in Japan. Lots of face close ups and arrows pointing out the differences found in the individual breeds. Photos are full color not full page but definitely plentiful. Text in Japanese.
